Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana (PMUY) is a flagship scheme of Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to provide clean cooking fuel like LPG to the people who are otherwise using traditional cooking fuels such as firewood, coal, cow dung cakes etc.
The scheme was launched by Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi on 1st May,2016 from Balia,Uttar Pradesh.
This scheme provides concessional LPG connections to the women of Rural India especially those belonging to the Below Poverty Line. This scheme comes under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
The scheme was launched to create a smoke free Rural India. The initial target of distributing LPG connections was of 8 crores by March 2020. And on 7th September 2019, 8th crore LPG connection was handed over in Aurangabad, Maharashtra.
According to a data, on 1st May 2016, about 62% of Indian population were having LPG connection and this increased to 99.8% as on 1st April 2021.
What is PM Ujwala Yojana?
Under this scheme, a deposit free LPG connection is provided to poor households with financial assistance of Rs.1600/- per connection by the Centre.
The main objectives of this scheme are Women empowerment, Reduction of health hazards due to cooking based on fossil fuels, curbing air pollution caused by burning fossil fuel and the illnesses like respiratory diseases caused by it, reducing number of deaths due to pollution caused by unclaen cooking fuel.
Who is eligible for PMUY?
- The applicant must have attained the age of 18 years.
- There should not be any other LPG connections in the same household.
- Any adult woman belonging to following categories :
- SC Households
- ST Households
- Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin)
- Most Backward Classes
- Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY)
- Tea and Ex- Tea Garden tribes
- Forest Dwellers
- People residing in Islands and River Islands
- SECC Households (AHL TIN)
- Poor Household.
What are the documents required for PMUY?
Following documents are required :
- KYC (Know Your Customer).
- Aadhaar Card of beneficiary and adult family members.
- Bank details – Bank Account Number and IFSC Code
- Proof of Address – If the connection is required in the same address Aadhaar will be taken as Proof of Identity and Proof of Address. In case connection address is different from the address on Aadhar Card a different Proof of Address needs to be submitted.
- Ration Card issued by the State from which application is being made/ other State Government document certifying family composition/ Self-Declaration as per Annexure I (for migrant applicants).

How to apply for PM Ujwala Yojana?
One can apply both online and offline.
- Online Application –
- Customer can enroll through online application by visiting the official site https://www.pmuy.gov.in/ujjwala2.html.
- On home page, there is an option of Apply for new Ujwala 2.0 connection, click on click here to apply then a new page will open giving you 3 options of Bharat Gas, Indane and HP Gas
- Select the company through which you want to take your LPG connection,
- Then a new page will open, Click on Register Now option and fill the necessary details and click on the submit button.
- Or You can also contact the nearest CSC Centre for submitting the online application.
- Offline Application – Customer can enroll by submitting the application directly at the distributorship.
What are the benefits of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana?
Government of India provides a cash assistance of Rs. 1600 for a connection of 14.2 kg cylinder and Rs.1150 for a 5 kg cylinder. This cash assistance covers the security deposit of a cylinder, Pressure regulator charges, LPG hose, Domestic gas consumer card, Installation charges.
First LPG refill and stove is provided free of cost to all the PMUY beneficiaries along with the deposit free LPG connection by the Oil Marketing Companies.
