The famous FLYING KITE EXPERIMENT - Michael Faraday tied a flying kite with a metal key during a thunderstorm and harnessed some electrical energy.

Alessandro Volta (1745-1827) invented the electric battery.

The FIRST ELECTRIC CELL- He soaked paper in salt water, placed zinc and copper on opposite sides of the paper. An electric current was produced due to the chemical reaction. By connecting many electric cells together, Voltas created a battery. It is in honor of Volta that batteries are rated in volts.

Michael Faraday was the first one to discover that when a magnet is passed through a copper wire, an electric current is produced.

Almost all the electricity we use today is made with magnets and coils of copper wire in giant power plants.

In 1879, Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. He searched for a strong material which can be used as a filament to light the bulb.

After trying many things, he used ordinary cotton thread soaked in carbon. This filament didn’t burn at all, it became incandescent- it glowed.

Edison wanted to make a electrical system that can provide a source of energy to power these new lights. He designed and built the first electric power plant that was able to produce electricity and carry it to people’s homes.

The New of Electricity began with the development of AC (alternate current) by Nikola Tesla.

Tesla discovered the rotating magnetic field and developed the alternating current electrical system that is used very widely today.

It was due to the AC system that the power could travel longer distances.
